Fake news: National security in the post-truth era

The rise of fake news poses a bigger challenge of how to deal with those seeking to destabilise the state or push their perspectives to the front. This report discusses the ways fake news can manifest, how its spread is enabled through social media and search engines, how people's cognitive predispositions work towards imbibing it, the international responses to it. The report also looks into the challenges of combating fake news. A good public-private partnership is necessary in order to expose fake news and ensure better cooperative efforts in countering it.

Fake news: False fears or real concerns?

In a "post-truth" era "fake news" has become become a much used and much hyped term. The 2016 US elections, Brexit referendum and "Pizzagate" have been often cited as examples of skewing democratic public process, fuelling propaganda and "hate speech" and even violence. This begs the question what exactly does the term "fake news" mean? In trying to answer these questions, this column will consider historical and contemporary perspectives on the term and its relationship with human rights.

Fake News Detection on Social Media

The spread of fake news has led to an increasing worry about its negative impact on people. Thus, there is an emergence in research on fake news. Fake news detection on social media presents several challenges which make the existing data algorithms from traditional news media ineffective or not applicable. This research survey aims to present a comprehensive review of detecting fake news on social media which includes characteristics of fake news on psychology and social theories, existing algorithms from a data-mining perspective, evaluation metrics and representative data sets. The study also discusses related research areas, open problems and future research directions for fake news detection on social media.

Current state of the art to detect fake news in social media

This research aims to present a survey on the state of the art on detecting fake news and its proposed solutions. The survey focuses on content analysis, network propagation, fact-checking and fake news analysis and emerging detection systems. It also discusses the rationale behind successfully deceiving readers and highlights the important challenges these solutions bring.
